Rainwater tanks

Installing a rainwater tank to use for garden irrigation or topping-up pools helps ease demand on town water supply.

Rainwater tanks are regulated through the Moreton Bay RegionalSunshine Coast and Noosa councils' building/plumbing approval processes.

Rainwater tanks are available in a wide range of sizes. Smaller tanks, suitable for townhouses and small gardens, start at less than 1000 litres. Most domestic use tanks are around 3000 to 5000 litres.

Unitywater provides a water-testing service for commercial customers.

  • Check if there are any council regulations about where you can put your tank. For example, in some areas there is a minimum distance from the side property boundary.
  • There may be other mandatory installation requirements such as mosquito-proof screens, stormwater connections and the fitting of a first-flush diverter.
  • Decide whether you need a pump and if so, how you will connect it to your electricity supply.

  • Approximately one pool in every 20 has a leak! Even a minor leak can result in a major water loss.  Under pressure a tiny leak can lose more than 3000 litres a day.
